"The Concert" - Oil on Canvas 24" x 36" Painted 2015 - $1200
This was based on the various poets, visionaries and artists that you can find down on Venice Beach. I wanted Jan to continue her development as a musician. I want us all to continue our development as musicians. Or painters, or stockbrokers. Whatever it is that makes your heart sing. If you can't hear your heart too well yet, just guess as to what it's saying - you're probably right!! One of the reasons Jan is regailing this council with her music is that she is a Real Punk Rock Girl. She just loves to sing and play her guitar. She loves to develop her expression through song - to feel her powers increase as she goes. She is fascinated by the structure of a song - the way the chords on a guitar serve as a frame or foundation upon which the melody of her voice integrates into the composition - simultaneously lifting and anchoring it as well. What a mystery is this spellbinding concoction of melody punctuated by the heart speeding magic of RHYTHM. So many things happen with music but I like to boil it down to one theme; music is fun. That is why Jan is giving the concert - it is just super cool and punk rock. And this is just the top layer of what is going on here. Jan is a complicated and even edgy young woman - music is just one of her many deep passions and talents. I am hoping the fun of the music can carry over into the fun of the painting as well and so I've developed this piece for about three years now off and on in between projects. It's been a bit tricky making my living as a painter out here in Los Angeles so I give a big shout out to my biggest supporters and collectors - thanks so much everyone. One very special supporter, John Proctor, has been quite helpful by providing me with plenty of projects. "The Jan series" is a giant project that has now turned into an art festival circuit in Albuquerque, NM. This paintings description is quite stream of consciousness and not very focused on any one subject - I hope that's alright. Anyway - the scene is inspired by my somewhat rad existence here in Los Angeles.
